R&D Intern (Stent)

The R&D Intern will assist in supporting development of medical device products through project work focused on developing new equipment, test models and test methods for verifying specifications, designs, fixtures, test processes, equipment and helping to ensure the concepts and/or prototypes meet their requirements. Typical job duties might include:
  • R&D engineering project involvement.
  • Develops new test models and test methods applying bioengineering and material science principles
  • Performs product and equipment testing
  • Capable of meeting project goals with moderate supervision.
  • Developing new equipment and automating processes
  • Performs research through literature search, design of experiments and benchtop studies
  • Performs additional duties and responsibilities as assigned
    1. Working toward a Bachelor or Graduate degree in Mechanical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, Materials Engineering or other related discipline.
    2. Creative, inquisitive and demonstrates a strong desire to “build” and “create”
    3. Demonstrated experience with cell/tissue culture, fluorescence microscopy, immunohistopathology
    4. Demonstrated experience reading & preparing scientific and technical documentation.
    5. Exposure and or/Knowledge of 3D CAD programs (SolidWorks or PRO/E)
    6. Computer experience and skills including MS Word, Excel and CAD.
    7. Machining experiences a plus.

    Desired Qualifications
    1. Strong analytical capability and organization skills.
    2. Coursework in mechanical design (2D/3D CAD), cell biology, material science, fluid mechanics
    3. Good interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to work effectively in a team environment and autonomously.
    4. Knowledge of medical device materials and processes: adhesives, plastics/polymers, metals, laser-welding, laser-cutting, braiding, and lamination.
    5. Knowledge of surface modification of metallic implants
    6. Strong understanding of tissue engineering principles
    7. Knowledge of device blood compatibility testing
    8. Knowledge of machine shop tooling. Able to use equipment to machine R&D prototype equipment.

    Additional Information
    • The primary work location for this position is Aliso Viejo, CA (company headquarters).
    • Relocation may be available for qualified candidates.
