Responsible for mechanical design conception, review, fabrication and prototyping. Leads a team of machinists and technicians to ensure timely delivery and quality of in-house fabricated mechanical componentry. Manages prioritization of machine shop operation, including department budgeting and inventory. Strategizes methods to manage finished components inventory, including derivation of accurate standard costs for components. Responsible for managing and collaboration with machine shop warehouse inventory personnel, equipment/fixture build function, Accounting team, Finance team, and customer design and timing expectations. Manage ownership of MRP system and planning of a streamlined procurement and inventory management system in effort to understand in-depth operational lead times and costs. Oversees machine shop projects and activities in support of company R&D and Engineering objectives. Job duties:
  • Work with R&D and Engineering teams to design and prototype machined mechanical components and other in-house fabricated componentry.
  • Manage department budget and develop standard costs for machined components based on material costs, machining hours, and overhead costs.
  • Manage machine shop inventory control team, which includes monthly cycle counts, cost reconciliation and accounting. This includes maintaining sufficient material stock to meet the demands of the machine shop job queue.
  • Devise, execute, and sustain plan for creating machine shop operation P&L. Responsible for cyclical reporting of P&L statements, including machine shop component inventories and detailed costs to Accounting and Finance teams.
  • Develop strategy for demand planning of machine shop tooling, fixturing, and component production.
  • Track machinists’ time for projects in order to be able to provide a labor cost for equipment and tooling that is fabricated in-house.
  • Assign and prioritize machine shop jobs for machinists on a daily basis. Update job status system to notify customers of current job status.
  • Maintain machine shop in such a manner as to promote a safe and clean working environment.
  • Outsource and maintain relationships with outside machine shops to handle machining job queue in a timely fashion and ensure appropriate turnaround of machine shop job requests.
  • Knowledge and understanding of machining set up and other equipment to fabricate componentry and tooling.
  • Manage cleaning, inspection, repair, and maintenance of machinery in the machine shop.
  • Perform additional responsibilities as assigned.

    1. B.S. in Mechanical Engineering or other related engineering/scientific field with at least ten (10) years of experience in mechanical design and machine shop environments; or at least fifteen (15) years of experience (no engineering degree) with conventional milling machines, lathes, surface grinders, and other machining equipment.
    2. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills required – Customer Service Champion.
    3. Previous management experience with demonstrated effectiveness in building teams and corporate systems and functions.
    Desired Qualifications
    1. Ability to read, interpret, and modify engineering drawings and sketches to a high level of detail.
    2. Mechanical design and assembly skills.
    3. Highly versed in mechanical design, machining, and fabrication methods.
    4. Ability to perform own machine set ups.
    5. Medical device industry experience preferred.
    6. Proficient in Solidworks.
    Additional Information
    • The primary work location for this position is Aliso Viejo, CA (company headquarters).
