Sr. Manager, Environmental Health & Safety (EHS)

Position Overview

Play a pivotal role in shaping and leading EHS initiatives at MicroVention's Aliso Viejo facility. Primary focus is on cultivating a culture of safety awareness and implement robust safety programs that encompass all facets of the site, including Manufacturing, Research & Development, and non-production areas. Assess critical programs, drive continuous improvement, and aspire to achieve a zero-accident record. Ensure the health and safety of all associates, contractors, and visitors while ensuring compliance with applicable regulations and laws. Lead the organization during significant safety events, such as pandemics or natural disasters. Additionally, build a team of EHS professionals to develop, implement, and enhance safety programs already in place. Job duties:
  • Develop and execute EH&S strategies and programs to foster a safety-conscious work environment, ensuring compliance with local regulations.
  • Establish a safety dashboard to monitor and evaluate relevant safety metrics.
  • Collaborate with Executive Management and stakeholders (e.g., manufacturing leadership within Aliso Viejo and Costa Rica, Chief People Officer, General Counsel, and EHS Committee) to set EHS goals, direction, and quarterly metrics.
  • Work closely with EHS leaders at other MicroVention sites to incorporate global and local safety best practices and formulate a comprehensive Business Continuity Plan.
  • Champion safety activities and act as a resource for safety representatives and management.
  • Cultivate and develop a high-performing safety team for the Aliso Viejo site to efficiently execute safety programs.
  • Provide quarterly EHS updates and improvements to management.
  • Analyze EHS performance, identify areas for improvement, and drive necessary enhancements.
  • Coordinates continuous improvement activities like Kaizen events or 5S to enhance safety.
  • Stay informed about evolving EHS standards and proactively manage EHS risks.
  • Oversee environmental programs, including waste management and emissions control.
  • Ensure compliance with water, stormwater, industrial hygiene, and occupational safety programs.
  • Manage emergency response procedures, hazardous waste security, and pollution remediation.
  • Coordinate investigations and activities related to EHS programs.
  • Maintain effective relationships with EHS-related agencies.
  • Adhere to quality systems, following FDA and international regulations when necessary.
  • Collaborate with other departments, like Manufacturing and Engineering, to guarantee the safe design of equipment, facilities, and processes.
  • Employ professional safety tools and knowledge to improve safety, including ergonomics and machine guarding.
  • Conduct EHS program assessments, encompassing ergonomics, PPE, and machine guarding.
  • Lead the development, implementation, and administration of EHS training programs in alignment with company policies.
  • Train and coach management in effective loss prevention techniques, incident investigation, hazard identification, self-inspection, and associate training.
  • Develop and recommend incident/accident prevention programs, ensuring comprehensive investigations with root cause analysis and implementation of corrective actions.
  • Develop and manage the budget for the EHS department.
  • Comply with applicable Laws and Regulations, adhere to Quality Management System processes and requirements as well as demonstrate Ethics and Integrity in all matters and at all levels throughout the organization.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.

Salary Range:

$115K- $160K (Compensation could be higher/lower depending on education, experience and skill sets)

    1. Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Health, Occupational Safety, Industrial Hygiene, or related field.
    2. A minimum of eight (8) years of related EHS experience in managing, directing, and planning in a complex and/or regulated manufacturing environment.
    3. A minimum of two (2) years of management experience.
    4. Demonstrated exceptional expertise in planning, budgeting, and project management to achieve of business goals.
    5. Previous experience in ISO 14001 environment or implementing an ISO 14001 program.
    6. Thorough knowledge of OSHA, NIOSH, EPA, FDA, NFPA, and other related compliance requirements.
    7. Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
    8. Strong organizational and presentation skills.
    9. Proficient with MS Word, Excel, Outlook, and Teams.
    Desired Qualifications
    1. Master’s degree in a related field preferred.
    2. Demonstrated ability to lead the safety function using a management system approach, conduct and support EHS audits and provide training necessary to maintain regulatory compliance preferably within the medical device industry.
    3. Demonstrated ability to influence and work with all levels of the organization.
    4. Demonstrated ability to lead multiple complex projects while successfully meeting budgets and schedules.
    5. Proven leadership and managerial skills demonstrated by developing, training, and coaching teams in an organizational setting, specifically at a manufacturing site.
