Position Overview

Production Chemist I
Supports development and manufacturing of primarily chemistry-based products and synthesis of raw materials for medical devices with work including writing or verifying specifications, identifying and implementing continuous improvements, maintaining product processes, designing fixtures, testing processes, evaluating equipment, and assessment of raw materials to ensure that subassemblies and finished products meet requirements

  • Improves, sustains, develops, or builds manufacturing processes for new and existing products, implements product changes or enhancements. (30%)
  • Investigates non-conformances/out-of-specification results. (25%)
  • Performs tests, analyzes and interprets test data, and reports results. (15%)
  • Supports validation of and validates materials, product, equipment, or processes. (10%)
  • Interfaces with other departments or companies to resolve production problems. (10%)
  • Confers with research/engineering personnel to prepare design modifications, clarifies instructions, troubleshoots problems, and develops product. (5%)
  • Supports key project decisions. (5%)
  • Performs other duties as assigned (create presentations, reports, etc.).
  • Day-to-day tasks are performed under some supervision.

Production Chemist II
Provides production support for the chemistry-related processes, and assists the Research and Development department with analysis and experimentation on substances, for product development and application.

• Performs chemical processes for production devices
• Supports validation of product and processes
• Interfaces with other departments to solve production problems
• Devises and develops formulas, processes, and methods for solution of technical problems
• Conducts research on currently manufactured products to evaluate and improve product
• Perform DOE and ANOVA type statistical analysis of process
• Prepares reports on projects for presentation to regulatory agencies, conferences, or for use in future research
• Maintains laboratory with equipment, raw material, and supplies


  • Production Chemist I
    • Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry, Chemical Sciences, or a related field of study.
    • Zero (0) to three (3) years of experience in a progressively responsible role in materials analysis or technician work.
    • Good written and verbal communication skills.
    • Must be able to perform and interpret GC and HPLC (UV-Vis) testing.
    Production Chemist II
    • Lab-scale polymer synthesis
    • General computer including Word, Excel, and Access
    • Process optimization
    • Knowledge of processes required for handling hazardous materials
    • BS in Chemistry
    • Background in using analytical techniques
    • Comprehension of reaction kinetics
    • Prior experience in medical device research
    • Working Knowledge of AutoCAD and SolidWorks and MiniTab Statistical software or equivalent

    Desired Qualifications Production Chemist I
    • Reading and preparing technical documentation.
    • Working knowledge of standard laboratory equipment, organic-synthetic and transformation processes, wet test methods, and qualitative and quantitative measurements.
    • Knowledge of medical devices.
    • Knowledge of cGMP, ISO 9001/13845, 21 CFR 800/820.
    • Computer skills including Microsoft Office Suite: Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Skype, and Word, Statistical Tools (e.g., MiniTab, SSPS), SolidWorks, and/or AutoCAD.

    • Ability to read and prepare technical documentation

    • Knowledge of medical devices

    • Knowledge of principles in lean manufacturing and root cause analysis methodology and/or tools: DMAIC, Ishikawa diagrams, 5 Whys, PDCA, OODA loop, SPC charts, etc.
    • Strong mathematical skills with proven statistics experience using various tools (Minitab, SSPS, DoE, etc.)
    • Knowledge of supplier qualifications, quality management systems, and product quality assurance
    • Lean/Six Sigma Yellow/Green/Black Belt certifications or equivalent
    • Computer skills including Microsoft Office Suite: Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Skype, and Word, SolidWorks, and/or AutoCAD
